As we transition from summer to fall, as the weather shifts and we dig out sweaters, coats and wool socks it’s sometimes hard to stay grounded. You may have heard people talk about being grounded or that they feel ungrounded. But what does that actually mean?
Being grounded is a feeling of connection to yourself, your body, your life, and those around you. It’s an energetic state of being. Keeping yourself grounded comes with so many incredible benefits and improves overall health on all levels – emotionally, physically, spiritually. It helps you stay in the present moment, which results in reduced stress, fear, worry and anxiety. You’ll be more focused, calmer and feel a sense of renewed energy.
In the past, humans had a close relationship with our planet, the earth. We grew our own food, worked in the earth and spent time outside, but today few of us do this. People no longer understand where food comes from. When shopping at my local farmers’ market, I’ve heard people complain about a bit of dirt on potatoes. Many of us live surrounded by concrete that creates a barrier between our feet and the earth, and we work inside climate-controlled offices all day. We’ve become very disconnected or ungrounded.
How do you know when you’re ungrounded?
The symptoms vary from person to person. Commonly I hear these complaints:
- Feeling generally out of sorts, unfocused or spacey
- Spinny, racing or scattered thoughts
- Can’t make decisions
- Lack creativity or the ability to solve problems
- Sense that they don’t fit or belong
- Unexplained dizziness
- Constant state of urgency (or as I call it, the rushy feeling)
How many of these symptoms are you feeling? Maybe you’ve even been to your doctor, had tests and have been told there’s nothing medically wrong with you.
If you don’t have any of these symptoms, congratulations – you’re doing a great job staying grounded!
How do you know when you’re grounded?
When grounded you feel fully present in your body and in the moment; you feel whole and complete, focused, calm. Grounded is our natural energetic state.
In today’s world, it’s not always easy to stay this way. We all become ungrounded from time to time (ok, a lot of the time!).
There are as many ways to ground as people, so find which ways bring you back to yourself. When you start to feel yourself slipping (and feeling symptoms listed above), place a hand over your heart. Notice your heart beat beneath your hand. Become aware of your breathing. Stay here for as long as you need. Then ask yourself what you need to do to ground and listen for the answer. The first thing that pops into your head is the right way for you.
To move back into or maintain your grounded state, here are some ideas for you to try.
- Walk or stand bare foot on earth
- Get a Reiki treatment or energy healing session
- Use grounding crystals like hematite or obsidian
- Practice yoga
- Cleanse with sage (smudging)
- Move! Dance, walk, hike, exercise
- Be in nature, hug a tree
- Listen to music
Which ones work for you? It’s all about shifting your energy.
Lately I’ve had several clients on my reiki table who were too ungrounded to figure out how to ground themselves, or they tried techniques that worked in the past but don’t now. The unfocused, spinny feeling had taken over and they couldn’t discern what they needed to do. With reiki they were able to feel what being grounded is like again – their physical and energy bodies needed a reminder. Starting from a place of grounding, they were able to better maintain that feeling themselves with some of these techniques.
By maintaining a sense of groundedness, you’ll experience less stress, fear and worry. Imagine what you can accomplish when you’re more focused, calmer and feel present in your life. Step into this natural state to thrive with renewed energy.
